Number of seats won by the 3 main political parties in the UK general elections since 1970.
Notice the 'hung parliament' of February 1974, a stable government could not be formed because the Liberals didn't have sufficient seats to support any of the 2 major parties, a general election was called in October of the same year which Labour won.
The conservatives won in 1979 and ruled for the next 18 years. The more-centre-than-left Tony Blair led the 'New' Labour led to a landslide victory in the general election of 1997. You will also notice very convincing wins for Labour in the 1997, 2001 and 2005 general elections.
The 2010 general election returned another hung parliament (the Conservatives won the most seats but fell short of the required 326) this time the Liberal Democrats won sufficient seats and can support any of the 2 major parties to form a stable government.
We'll see who it will be in the next couple of days.
